Why Choose a Private Assessment?

studentsAll students through age 21 are eligible for a free psychoeducational evaluation provided by their school district of residence to determine the presence of an intellectual or learning disability. School psychologists administer assessments for the purpose of identifying students with intellectual delays and specific learning disabilities in order to determine eligibility for Special Education. With this determination as the goal, and their considerable work load, less time is given to identifying underlying issues and how best to address a student’s learning needs other than through placement in a program with other students with learning difficulties. While these programs may be of considerable assistance, the School Psychologist is not allowed to make recommendations for private interventions that would financially obligate the school district.

A private assessment allows for an open-ended approach that focuses on the student and his or her learning strengths and weaknesses, and considers a variety of ways to address underlying issues that are interfering with school performance. Information gained though the assessment will provide for a diagnosis, if appropriate, and identify factors that may impact academic achievement. Specific recommendations are made for school accommodations and programs, as well as home-based and private interventions, so that a student may progress and grow in his/her learning.
