Assessment

An assessment can range from a simple screening for intellectual giftedness, to a full psychoeducational/neuropsychological battery of tests. During the initial consultation we will determine how comprehensive an evaluation is needed. A full assessment will identify overall processing strengths and weakness in:

  • Intellectual functioning
  • Executive functioning
  • Auditory and visual processing
  • Reasoning abilities
  • Working memory
  • Auditory and visual memory
  • Visual motor skills
  • Processing speed

When necessary to answer the referral questions, academic skills are assessed in the areas of:

  • Reading -Sight word recognition, reading speed, comprehension and decoding (sounding out) skills.
  • Written language -Sentence and essay construction, spelling and proofreading
  • Oral language -Listening and speaking
  • Mathematics -Computational skills, math concepts and word problems.

An observation of the learning environment is included, as needed and possible, depending on the age of the client.

Upon completion of an assessment, a follow-up meeting is scheduled to discuss the results and the written report. At this meeting you will be informed of the testing results, including the identification of any learning disabilities, processing strengths and areas of challenge and how these may be impacting school performance. You will be given recommendations for enhancing the fit between the student’s personal learning profile and the school environment. You will also be informed about accommodations, programs and support services available.
