About Dr. Terrill Helander

me1I am licensed as an Educational Psychologist and School Psychologist by the state of California. I earned my doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Southern California in 1990, a Masters in Psychology and qualifications for credentialing in school psychology from Cal. State Northridge in 1982, and a BA from Pitzer College in 1980.

I have nearly 30 years of experience providing psychoeducational services in public schools, private practice and a nonprofit setting working with students, teachers and parents. I specialize in working with students 6-25 and providing parental guidance and support. I have extensive experience counseling children, administering psychoeducational and neuropsychological assessments, consulting, teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate students from several colleges and universities in the provision of psychological services in the schools. I am well versed in Special Education guidelines and law including your rights to appropriate services within your district.

I use a competence-based approach focused on a student’s patterns of strengths and weakness to gain a better understanding of factors impacting performance and to help clients utilize their strengths to compensate for problem areas. I have an expertise in teaching resiliency skills to children and have authored a curriculum, I Think I Can! The Resilient Child, which has been implemented with considerable success in several school districts.

I am the mother of four young adult children. I know first hand the challenges of parenting children with a range of temperaments, learning styles and emotional complexities  and locating and advocating for necessary services.
